Aromatic, low-growing plants like creeping thyme and chamomile can soften the edges of cut or natural stone and emphasize the pattern of your walkway. Seeds can be sown directly into joints between stones then covered with stone dust or sand and gently watered until they can grow on their own with no more than occasional care. Young plants can also be inserted into slits made with a knife in the joints.

Letting grass grow up between stones can unify your yard and pathway, and the end result requires little more than occasional weeding and mowing as desired.

Pots or pieces of driftwood placed strategically alongside the path can help tie the stone walk more organically into your landscape.
